The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the common methods used to repair damaged slab-on-grade. The type of repair depends on the magnitude of soil movement, extent of damage, and the potential for future soil movement. Repair types have been separated into three general categories. The first repair category is removal and replacement of the foundation. Two common types of new foundations are the reinforced mat or reinforced mat supported by piers. The second repair category is partial removal and/or strengthening of the foundation. The main objective of this repair is to fix the damaged foundation and then strengthen it so that the damage does not reoccur. Common methods used to accomplish this repair are deepened perimeter footings and/or removal and replacement of the slab. The third repair category is patching the existing cracks in the concrete. This repair only is recommended if the foundation is not excessively deformed and if the slab-on-grade can accommodate the estimated future soil movement. The main method used to accomplish this type of repair is to inject epoxy into the slab cracks.
