There was a little bit of concern with defensive end Randy Gregory's weight when he was first drafted by theDallas Cowboys, but things have been slowly shaping up for the pass rusher as he goes through organized team activities.
At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Gregory weighed a measly 235 pounds. Since then, he's gained eight pounds and is up to 243.
“I’m just slowly gaining weight as I go." Gregory said after OTAs on Wednesday. "I know the coaches are happy about it. I’m happy about it obviously. It’s going to help my game out. It hadn’t hurt my game at all as far as my conditioning and like that. That’s just another aspect of my game I’ve got to work on. “I was surprisingly light when I got here. I’ve gained a lot since I got here, surprisingly with the amount of running we do out there. My main goal is to take it day-by-day and get better every day."
Gregory's struggled a little with the transition from the college game to the NFL. At rookie minicamp in May, Gregory cut his first practice short due to heat exhaustion. And on Wednesday at OTAs, Gregory vomited on the field citing lack of hydration as the reason for the loss of his lunch.
The pass rusher should be in no hurry to gain weight since the season is still more than 90 days away. He has plenty of late nights ahead to eat hamburgers from In-N-Out this summer.
As for his on-field performance, Gregory gets to go against one of the best offensive lineman in the NFL on a consistent basis. The pass rusher faces left tackle Tyron Smith who has been giving Gregory all he can handle. He sees it as an opportunity to compete and get better every day.
“That’s probably the only thing that keeps me going,” Gregory said. “I was saying that in my head last night. As much as he beats me every day, hopefully the game will be a lot easier. Usually it is if you do the right things in practice, go hard in practice, work on little details in practice, then the games usually come easier. . . .
“He’s a real big guy, and he’s got good feet for his size, good hips for his size, so it’s hard to get by a guy like that. I do what I can. But he’s one of the best tackles in the league, so there’s only so much you can do.”
