New research shows 90% of The First Tee alumni consider themselves both lifelong golfers and credit The First Tee for improving their golf skills. How are we getting participants hooked on game of golf and creating players for life?
3 ways The First Tee is creating more golfers:
1. Activity-based programs: Coaches at The First Tee are trained to create a fun, hands-on environment for participants to learn the game. To start, we waste no time getting new players to pick up a club and start playing the game immediately. If you’ve ever seen a lesson in action, you’ll probably notice pool noodles, hula hoops and other brightly colored items to set up stations like tic-tac toe golf, zoo golf or baseball golf. These games are a fun way to introduce youth to golf concepts.
2. Providing affordable playing opportunities: Our chapters offer need-based scholarships to youth so everyone can participate. Most chapters encourage and many times sponsor youth to participate in playing opportunities like PGA Jr. League Golf and Drive, Chip & Putt. The AJGA Ace Grant provides top golf competition opportunities to young golfers in The First Tee without the financial resources. In 2015, The First Tee participants were represented:
- More than 2,500 participants in a PGA Jr. League
- Almost 3,000 competed in Drive, Chip & Putt, seven made it to finals at Augusta National
- 115 Ace Grants awarded to participants through 2015
- The First Tee provides a dozen national events including academies and competitions that serve over 350 participants per year, at no cost to them.
3. High School and College Prep: As young people enter high school and college, their lives become busy. Balancing academics, golf, and other commitments can require a lot of effort. The life skills learned through The First Tee—like goal ladders, STAR (Stop, Think, Anticipate, Respond), communication skills and more—helps participants prepare for balancing full, and sometimes stressful, schedules.
- Last school year 3,600 participants of The First Tee were members of their high school golf teams and more than 525 of our alumni played collegiate golf in the 2014-2015 season.
- Since 2005, 50 of The First Tee participants have received the Evan’s Scholarship scholarship, the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.
- The College Golf Prep Academy provides advanced players within The First Tee to experience what it’s like to play for a college team through training and tournament play.
In addition, research shows us there are that three factors contributing to participants staying in The First Tee, and ultimately becoming players for life: enjoyment of the experiences; confidence in golf ability; support by coaches and friends.
